As the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, not fix it!". Well guess, what? You're not broken, and so you don't need fixed. This is something I come across often with my clients. They feel as if they have failed so many times that they just don't have the "will power" or "self-motivation" to make the right changes.
The interesting thing about this, is when I begin to talk with them more, we end up uncovering MANY areas in their life where they DO have will power and self-motivation. It's not that they lack these things completely. They just aren't applying those strengths that they already possess to certain areas in their life such as healthy eating or consistent exercise. I have been blown away to learn things about them such as one client telling me how she has been the sole provider for her home during a time that her husband couldn't work. Talk about commitment and sacrifice! The most ironic examples are my very own personal training clients who come to weight train twice a week, who never cancel unless they have a valid reason, yet feel they are unable to make the commitment to eating right consistently. They feel they don't have the strength or motivation to do so. How can that be when they faithfully come to work out, even when they don't feel like it?
From my perspective, it's because they don't believe they can do it. They can't visualize those changes in their lives. They have what it takes to do it! These are strong, capable women who have all of the tools they need! As a health coach, my job is to help them see this themselves. They have to change their mindset about these things. I help them to see the value in making these changes, and I help them to imagine being successful in this and how great they will feel when they do.
What is it in your life that you desire change in? Maybe it's not health related, but instead its a career change. Or going back to school and getting a degree. Can you imagine yourself doing it and do you believe it is possible? Change starts in the MIND. There is so much power in our thoughts. Remind yourself of your strengths and abilities that you have utilized in the past and even currently in other areas of your life. These same strengths can be applied to whatever it is that you are wanting change in. You don't need fixed! You have what it takes, so believe it, and take that first step TODAY!
